I recently got a cable upgrade. When did the History channel turn into shit? I saw something the other night about Leonardo DiVinci possibly getting all his knowledge from "ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS". Fart.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-08-03 The "History" Channel has been "THE CONSPIRACY THEORY FREE MASONS ILLUMINATI SATAN MAYANS ALIENS 2012 DOOMSDAY" Channel for about six years now.

Old_Zircon - 2012-08-03 I actually remember it starting to get like that back in the late 90s.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-08-03 History, Discovery, and just about every other channel that started out trying to be even remotely educational has gone down the the News of the World rabbit hole.
It's rather amusing, in a way. I use them as examples of what would happen if PBS became for-profit every time Republicans go off about how they should de-fund the CPB. It doesn't convince them, and they don't want to hear about how it's a miniscule amount anyway, and they go back to watching "Swamp People" or whatever.

boner - 2012-08-03 TLC was awesome when they had shows like Secret Life of Machines. And did they at one point broadcast open heart surgery and stuff? Anyway, good times.
PBS isn't exactly immune, just look up Gary Null.

I submitted this out of amazement and disgust that climate change deniers IN THE COMMENTS are pointing to IN SEARCH OF, a show that did segments about BIGFOOT and ASTROLOGY, for fuck's sake, to prove that scientists in the seventies were expecting another ice age.
We need to teach kids about science, not only to compete with the chinese, but in order for citizens to participate in democracy as science becomes more important in public policy. Above all, we need to teach kids what science is. The scientific method must be studied and internalized like the rules of grammar. Kids should know what peer review is and how to check sources. (Do I know what peer review is? No, I don't, not really.)
Most people in the anti-vaccine movement are supposed to be well-educated. Smart people are making stupid choices, because they don't know how to test and evaluate knowledge.

memedumpster - 2012-08-04 Monsanto, Dow, and a thousand other slave masters would suffer greatly at the hands of a scientifically educated populace.
