a lot of mentally ill people get wrapped up in the "magic beans" aspect of the church - casting out demons, rebuking in jesus' name, spirtual warfare, etc - as an attempt to understand and control what they're going through. a whole lot of good would be done by drastically increasing mental health resources in the united states
Alright, Protestants are all over the map ranging from renaissance enlightenment to baseline to batshit crazy. They can be anywhere from a 1 (Unitarians) to 10 (Baptists/Pentecostalism). Even within the same movements though, you can have big variations.
Catholicism is uniformly a 7 to 7 1/2. They all get the same marching orders from the same central authority that's always a good 300 years behind the times.
