I'm going to guess they didn't have anything stopping the shrapnel from tearing some new holes into their fragile bodies.
|
petep - 2008-01-08 the products of the thermite reaction are *molten iron* and intense heat. I hope they at least had an umbrella

Chem majors: was the explosion because the thermite was hot enough to sublimate the ice?
|
Repomancer - 2008-01-03 Thermite burns hot enough to break the molecular bond and split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, which recombine in spectacular fashion.
I Almost Got Busted™ once when a cop tried to put out some of the stuff with the garden hose. BANG, and then handcuffs.

Automatic five stars for thermite.
It makes me happy in my face.

So where does one procure a bucket of thermite, exactly...
|
Repomancer - 2008-07-12 You can buy it from United Nuclear, among others, or you can just make it yourself. 74% aluminum powder, 26% iron oxide powder by weight (both are available at larger paint stores). Ignite with a magnesium ribbon, or my preferred method, a 4th of July sparkler.
I have a long and funny story about this, but sadly it has vanished from the PoEN forums along with everything else from before 1/1/07.
