Like a more tragic version of the 'Brazil' saga, except Cimino did the butchering himself in the end...

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-02-04
I was just about to submit this, but I'm five years too late. Heaven's Gate is now part of the Criterion Collection, and people are talking about it like it was some kind of Masterpiece. I didn't like when I saw the complete film in 1988, but i never was a fan of four hour Westerns. One thing i would very much like to see is a documentary about the historical events that Heaven's gate inspired.
Here's what i think: the film that changed Hollywood wasn't Heaven's Gate. It was STAR WARS, or as the kids call it, "Episode 4: A NEW HOPE". What Kristofferson said about the money using Heaven Gate to s control is probably true, but STAR WARS was the motivation. Thirty-five years later, and we've got a crazy glut of comic book sci-fi action movies every summer. And remakes. And sequels. Because they're not seen as a risk.
JJ Abrams is going to direct Star Wars VII. You knew there was going to be a Star Wars Seven.
