punch drunk babies - 2009-11-20
I think this was on the Mr Show site, on Mr. Cross' blog. This sort of just goes on and on, but stars for that blog, and the James Belushi character it introduced

I figure there's better than a 50% chance "Larry the Cable Guy" despises his audiences even more than Cross. But that still doesn't change the fact he's a soulless, talentless, racist whore.

David Cross is a pretentious douche when he's not in character. Dan Whitney is a Douche when he is in character. This wasn't funny.

His 1st Larry quote was torn out of context. It ends with "...why do you hate us?" That's the joke. Not a funny joke, but a joke. That wouldn't bug me if Cross didn't later go on to bitch about being quoted out of context! I do agree with David's point that Larry always goes for the cheap laugh and is a crass consumer cash whore. Don't get me wrong, I loathe Larry just as much as anybody, but Cross really comes off as a douche-bag in this clip, so no stars for anyone.

I approve of his anti anti-intellectualism.

I disagree that Cross understands or knows Larry's audience. Sure he went to places in the South, but he grew up in an incredibly rich, white town (Roswell), did a show in a town famous for being where they hold the Master's golf tournament, and Baton Rouge, which can't be in any way be considered a rural area. Larry, on the other hand, isn't even from the South, but has more of a claim on being a redneck than Cross has enough time left in his life to achieve. Cross contends that he his the rural, hillbilly cred that Larry has and I can't be convinced that Cross has any more experience with rural hillbillies that New Yorkers watching TV do, and I have no doubt at all that Whitney has had far more interaction with actual low-income people than Cross has had. A quick glance at even cursory biographies would reveal this. Cross is literally one of those coddled kids that went to a rich magnet school and afterwards bummed around in New York without a real plan.
As Metalocalypse has taught us, any good comedian has contempt for all of his audiences.
That being said, Whitney's show is racist and stupid, and targeted to a racist, stupid audience.

Goofy Gorilla - 2009-11-21 Rednecks don't run any private Christian schools? Sometimes when your dad's job is to minister to churches in two counties with a combined population of less than 800 the private school in stink-city Florida you get transferred to when you're sixteen might not be all glamor and pomp. Maybe we're getting our terms mixed up, but, as the other the other poster(Ms. Suggins, I suppose) confusedly pointed out, Whitney's lack of any worldly sophistication was evident much before he adopted his Southern persona.
Now maybe Wikipedia's completely wrong about this, and maybe everything Whitney said in his numerous interviews have all been calculated lies. Could be I guess. Cross certainly doesn't address it in this letter, neither does he indicate that his (Cross's) upbringing and early career are not that of a privileged rich person.
|
Goofy Gorilla - 2009-11-21 Also I should add that I think Cross is being deliberately disingenuous to increase the effect of his contempt for Whitney and his audience, whoever they may be. Cross obviously doesn't really care if actually knows Whitney's audience or not.
|
Keefu - 2009-11-21 That's some pretty fair criticism and I'm not exactly sure how the King's Academy and Berean School stack up as far as private schools go. I think

David Cross is wrong about Wonder Showzen, though. Subversive, sure. But the funniest show on TV? I guess like five out of every 100 minutes.
|
Toenails - 2009-11-21 I really have to recommend Xavier:Renegade Angle. Because they really got their act together and made a show subversive *and* funny.
And also because I went as Xavier for Halloween this year.

It does my heart good to see that others share my opinion.
