Man, look at how much life there is in these compared to the color movies of Berlin at a comparable date.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-06-01

Ugh. Not a single obese person. What kind of world is that to live in!?

MyNameIsUnimportant - 2013-06-01

Because everybody smoked instead.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-01

People didn't start getting really fat until the mid 70s.

il fiore bel - 2013-06-01

Albuquerque Halsey - 2013-06-01

What cost ##CONTENT##.05 in 1939 would cost ##CONTENT##.82 in 2012.

Screwtape - 2013-06-01

MyNameIsUnimportant - 2013-06-01

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster. To me, being a gangster was better than being President of the United States. Even before I first wandered into the cabstand for an after-school job, I knew I wanted to be a part of them. It was there that I knew that I belonged. To me, it meant being somebody in a neighborhood that was full of nobodies. They weren't like anybody else. I mean, they did whatever they wanted. They double-parked in front of a hydrant and nobody ever gave them a ticket. In the summer when they played cards all night, nobody ever called the cops.

BillLumbergh - 2013-06-01

Goodfellas takes place in the 50s you unbelievable jerk.

Riskbreaker - 2013-06-01

I don't see anyone with an onion tied to their belts.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-06-01

No, but a lot of those belts are awfully high up.

Screwtape - 2013-06-01

That was the 19-dicketies, not the 30ths.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-01

The smog at 2:29 is pretty amazing.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-06-01

Who needs an EPA anyway?

garcet71283 - 2013-06-01

Its really noticeable how not-fat America was compared to now.

Riskbreaker - 2013-06-01

This was before all the procesed crap of decades later. It surely shows the difference.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2013-06-01

People were a lot more active back then, too. It's not just the diet and portions of today that's the problem. Back then, you had to do a lot more walking to get to work, and more work when you got home.

... and fat people were more prone to ridicule and mockery.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-06-01

It looked pretty comparable to today, really. There was a fair number of heavy-set and doughy people mixed in with the leaner ones and a few truly fit & trim ones. Granted, there weren't any morbidly obese people such as we see nowadays, but those are really less common than people seem to think.

All those heavier people would be considered obese by medical standards, by the way.

Anyway, if this makes you all nostalgic for "better" times, pay closer attention. You'll notice the pollution, of course, you may also notice the lack of older people, Those folks who look like they're in their middle ages are a lot younger than you think.

You may also notice you don't see any shots of white folks and black folks in the same place.

garcet71283 - 2013-06-01

Careful...the German in me is getting a stiffy.

memedumpster - 2013-06-01

Everything looks so normal.
