Technically he's wrong, he owes performance royalties for the performance he recorded and every playback of the video. I'm rusty on my copyright but I'm pretty sure there are additional royalties for mechanical reproduction that he technically owes on top of the performance royalties.

I mean, I'm no fan of the current state of copyright law, especially as it pertains to music, but unless they're contacting him only about the mechanical rights of the recording itself (he owns those, although he'd still have to pay the ASCAP/BMI/ETC. royalties), and not the piece of music, he's legally in the wrong.

Not even rabbit videos are free of corporate evil (although songwriting royalties are about the least evil part of the music industry, since the bulk of them actually do make it to the artist typically).
