True Detective is pretty straightforward. I mean, there's plenty of unknown stuff, but it's not confusing.

I concur. But there are a lot of names heard almost exclusively in that region, kind of like how Fargo was Gunderson, Lundegaard, Gustafson, etc.. things that I could keep track of, mostly because my parents' friends live in the midwest and have those names. I'll admit that I got Thierot and Ladoux's names backwards in conversation, just because I'm like "hmm... French names.. think think think.."

Also as far as I know, most shows don't jump back and forth across 17 years with backstory before that, but if someone can't figure that out, they probably didn't understand Pulp Fiction either.

Series writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto said this about "plot twists" and fan speculation at an interview over at The Daily Beast:

"I've enjoyed reading people theorize about what's going to happen because it's a sign that you're connecting," Pizzolatto told me. "But I'm also sort of surprised by how far afield they're getting. Like, why do you think we're tricking you? It's because you've been abused as an audience for more than 20 years. I cannot think of anything more insulting as an audience than to go through eight weeks, eight hours with these people, and then to be told it was a lie—that what you were seeing wasn't really what was happening. The show's not trying to outsmart you."

Yeah I read that too. I've said it before but people were generally pissed off at the ending of Lost, like they "tricked them" even though they're complaining during the run of the show about temporal inconsistencies, arrivals of new castaways, a monster made out of smoke and other science fictional shit. The show didn't trick them any more than the X Files tricks people when Scully gets abducted or something but can't remember it next week.

I think the show's brilliance is its balance of complexity within its simplicity, bringing in some supernatural elements without being (pardon my pun) preachy about it.

The idea behind the sketch is more along the lines of "nobody can understand what they're saying".

I do appreciate the callback to this:

Whatever you think of TD, this is a terrible sketch.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-03-07

I never saw True Detective, but I thought the sketch was funny.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-07

You better start; it'll be Spoiler City in a couple days time, and then you'll be shit outta luck.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-03-07

"Spolier City" sounds like a great idea for Joel's next sketch.

Moderately Funny
