I really liked the show too. Its very different to other stuff in its genre. I like how the characters are really bland and kinda boring and dont do much (compared to, say, the highly polished characters of cowboy bebop about whose personal stuff the whole show revolved) It leaves more room for random stuff to happen and for some *space* in the show.
Also like how its so throwaway and fun and silly with no continuity (all the main characters often dying at the end of an episode (or being turned in to zombies halfway through!)) but it also attains moments of pathos and or philosophical introspection.
Also I'm very pleased that the show is *not* about space dandy cruising the galaxy looking for hoes like some sleazy japanese leisure suit larry. In fact except for "boobies" (which is sort of a joke I think) I dont think the show is at all misogynistic.

infinite zest - 2014-04-25

I think I've seen up until episode, but yeah I like its open-endedness. We grow up to demand some continuity in series, and forget what it was like to have missed a few episodes of Ducktales or something because of soccer practice. The show basically reboots every time, and while there's character development, you can skip around just fine.

But ugh.. there's a US intro? This one's the only one I've seen. I kind of don't want to watch the other one, this one's so perfect. But now I have to.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-04-25

Yeah. its sooo lame.. Its basically a boring-ass simulacrum of the cowboy bebop intro* with way less interesting visuals. I guess they didnt want to scare stupid foreign audiences with something different.

*Which is awesome in its own right btw

infinite zest - 2014-04-25

I watched the US version.. eh.. not so bad. I like how 1950s radio the narrator sounds.. very confident but also like "what am I narrating exactly?" A lot of that humor was lost in translation for me. But yeah, Japanese intro's waaaaaaaaaaaay cooler :)

infinite zest - 2014-04-25

Also Space Dandy's one of the few comedic animes that has made this Westerner (pardon me) LOL. This includes CB and SC for the record (the pot episode of Samurai Champolo was pretty funny though.) I watch anime mostly for the visuals and the story, and Space Dandy's just plain fun.

infinite zest - 2014-04-25

Is there a contingent of anime fans who wish that AS would broadcast the original Japanese versions instead of the dubs? I feel like a lot of people who watch AS for Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, ATHF etc. and aren't really versed in anime culture like I'm assuming most of us are, the humor is lost and put into a different category.

I don't really have a big problem with modern dubs, but I grew up with the really shitty 90s dubs and can't watch anything again in English that I've already seen in its original language. I'm sure there's SAG rules and all sorts of things I'm not taking into account here, but it doesn't seem like AS would just make the assumption that their anime fanbase doesn't like to read subtitles, and would be turned off by such a concept.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-04-25

The show's narrator is also great. He has a real "Hitchhiker's Guide" vibe to him, especially when he loses patience with the cast.

The US intro isn't terrible, it's just nowhere near as nice as this one.

Xenocide - 2014-04-25

Credit where it's due: The US intro was used because Cartoon Network didn't have the rights to this song; they got them in the middle of the season and replaced the US intro with the original Japanese one. Even though it's a minute longer, which means two fewer ad slots CN can sell per episode.

I actually like the English dub of this show better, thanks to the snarky, apathetic narrator.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-04-25

@infinite zest
I usually always watch any cartoons / anime dubbed in English if I can find them that way.
It cus I'm often mainly interested in watching the animation and dont want to miss any frames reading the subs.
Also subs can miss elements when very fast dialogue is happening or several people are speaking at the same time.
I feel cus its animated the visuals and the voices are seperate anyway, so in theory a dub could be just as good (For example, I think the ghost in the shell dubbing is fantastic)
Conversely I always watch live action films in the original language.

SolRo - 2014-04-25

Shows are dubbed into their native language all over. Between people with poor eyesight complaining and idiots hating foreign languages, there's plenty of reason to do so.

Not dubbing just makes dedicated fans happy, and they'd likely watch the show anyhow.

Personally I like subs for SD because the robots dubbed voice is annoying and Dandy sounds flat. I liked the dub over the sub for Blue Submarine #6 because they did a better job conveying emotions during conversations

infinite zest - 2014-04-25

Yeah I see both sides of the argument. I used to work at a mainly foreign movie theatre and one of our biggest complaints was when people would go and not have their reading glasses (if the title is something in Spanish, maybe you could assume or do a little research!?!) or a movie in multiple languages like 'Babel..'

Paprika, for example, we had a dubbed version of, and frankly there's so much stuff going on and so much to explain that it'd be impossible, for me at least, to take it all in in one sitting were it subtitled. If I were a customer and had to pay admission to see what I didn't see the first time, I'd feel pretty shitty.

It's funny, because I like those "abridged" anime series like Helsing and AoT, and frankly those voice actors are better than what I normally hear that's professionally done.

SolRo - 2014-04-25

there's no sides, just two sets of idiot fanboys fighting on the internet.

there are terrible dubs and there are dubs that are better than the original voice acting. Argue about something more definitive, like how ponies are effeminate and dumb.

memedumpster - 2014-04-25

I confess, I honestly get a kick out of recognizing the dub actors from other anime when I hear them. I'm that way with most cartoons.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-04-25

The song is called Viva Namida, in case you want to find it on iTunes or just download it illegally like one of the main characters in this show would do.

infinite zest - 2014-04-25

Heh.. I felt a little guilty about torrenting this, since I could watch it almost simultaneously in the US, unlike Attack on Titan which is JUST NOW COMING TO THE US!?! But yeah. That's what Meow would do. Of course, it'd put some sort of virus into the Aloha Oe, which sets them on some course to a planet of software pirate species.. if that's already an episode arc it wouldn't surprise me.

Sudan no1 - 2014-04-25

Adult Swim is running the show with this intro, at least where I live. /shrug

Rick and Morty spoiled me for "wacky space adventure" cartoons. The humor in this show can't really hold a candle to R&M, I don't know if that's due to translation issues, or maaaybe SD just isn't that funny.

Space Dandy looks better naked though, I'll give him that.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-04-25

Yeah, Dandy's got a pretty nice body for someone who regularly eats at the future space version of Hooters.

Sudan no1 - 2014-04-26

The expired food QT buys probably helps him purge.

Riskbreaker - 2014-04-25

I echo what others have said, i like the episodes where the characters either die or just finish with a silly cliffhanger. Then the next episode they act like the previous one never happen. I'm ok with that format, most tv shows trying to create "arcs" usally just drag things for the sake of it.

memedumpster - 2014-04-26

This show must have something else going for it. So far, everyone seems to be saying it's a stock character reset show with no depth, all reference humor, and no plot, yet somehow with this, unlike every other piece of media, poeTV loves it.

I admit to not quite understanding.

Old_Zircon - 2014-04-25

BOOBIES

Binro the Heretic - 2014-04-25

It took me a little while to warm up to this show, but the "zombie" episode won me over.

sasazuka - 2014-04-25

I don't think they show the SPACE DANDY dub on TV at all in Canada (certainly not on any channel I can get on my crap cable) so I've only seen it in Japanese with English subtitles on the Funimation site. Even though I am someone who always prefers the subtitled version of things, I still kinda want to see at least an episode or two of the dub for comparison purposes (beyond the short clips of it), but that'll probably have to wait until I get the Blu-Rays.

I was very skeptical that I would like SPACE DANDY at first, I was half-expecting it to be silly for a few episodes and then start taking itself way too seriously like COWBOY BEBOP, but, nope, it stayed a fun romp throughout. I think my favourite episode was number 10, I loved seeing that Myau/Meow's home planet was essentially just contemporary Japan with cat people and I was totally into the Haruhi Suzumiya "Endless Eight" allusions, but the Chameleonian episode (12) is a very close second, especially when the Chameleonian becomes so Dandy that even Dandy is unsure which one is the real Dandy.

Sudan no1 - 2014-04-26

>into the Haruhi Suzumiya "Endless Eight" allusions

They're all Groundhog Day references, weeabuddy.

sasazuka - 2014-04-26

I didn't say the episode exclusively referred to "Endless Eight", but the 8 on the calendar at least seems to me to be a nod to it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-04-26

No, there were clearly "Endless Eight" references.

sasazuka - 2014-04-26

It's not even like time loop comedy was original to GROUNDHOG DAY, the 1987 anime TV series KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD had a couple of episodes like that (not that I'm saying the concept is original to KOR either nor am I implying GROUNDHOG DAY ripped-off KOR, as I'd very much doubt Danny Rubin or Harold Ramis would've been familiar with it).
