I've said it here before, but if you haven't played through Star Control 2, you're missing out on a hell of a lot of fun. I played the UQM release some years back and was so pleased. It was like when I found Exult and could play Ultima 7 again.

glasseye - 2015-01-29

It's a great freakin' game.

Scrimmjob - 2015-01-29

Star Control 2 and Starflight are in a league of their own. Is this a trailer for the version of Ur-Quan masters that has been out for a while, or is this something new?

Also wtf with Star Control 3?

infinite zest - 2015-01-29

I bought a 3DO right before they went more-or-less under for 70 bucks just so I could get Star Control 2 and Return Fire (because the person wanted to buy a Jaguar.. good investment..) Say what you will about that system but the 3DO port was fucking awesome. I'd play this game all over again.

Really great game. I played SC3 melee a LOT in high school.

Things SC3 got right:

-The dialog and quests were decent
-They fixed the utterly broken flagship

Things SC3 got wrong:

-Low budget muppets
-The horrible colony management
-The ending

SPOILERS!

It's the exact same story as Mass Effect (a hack game written by hacks). There are super beings that harvest all sentient life in the galaxy in cycles. They send harbinger servants ahead of them to prepare everything. You defeat the harbinger ships, but have no hope of beating the super beings. WHAT TO DO? You fly around the galaxy collecting Christmas cheer from all the races so you have enough energy to care bear stare the super beings with enough nourishment to make them sleep another cycle.

Yes. It is that lame.

Scrimmjob - 2015-01-30

My main gripe with SC3 was navigating using that goddamn 3d starmap, while games like SC2 might have had an over simplified map, at least you could tell where the fuck you were trying to go. I kind of liked the muppets personally.

I remember hearing sometime last year that Stardock had the rights to Star Control and were in the process of making a new one. Looking forward to seeing what they do with it!

FABIO - 2015-01-30

Along with the recent Homeworld discussion, I have never played a space game that was made better by adding a 3rd dimension (barring flight sims).

DO NOT WATCH VIDEO IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED YET! You will miss out on one of the biggest "oh shit!" moments in gaming.

The proper way to experience SC2:

Play SC1 for a bit

Read the entire 30+ page prologue for SC2, which leaves you hanging what happened to Earth and the good guys.

Start playing SC2, slooooowly moving your flagship closer to Earth.

"Whoah, what's that? OH SHIT!"

wtf japan - 2015-01-30

I played it for the first time a few years ago, and I consider it one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I can't imagine what it was like to play it back in 1992.

DrVital - 2015-01-30

It was like playing the future.

fluffy - 2015-01-30

It still feels like playing the future. Amazing branching storylines! A real sense of cause and effect! Shit-tons of secrets to discover!

StanleyPain - 2015-01-30

You know what game is REALLY good that I think SC fans would probably like? SPAZ (Space Pirates and Zombies). It's basically like a very simplified version of SC2 focusing mainly on the combat with randomly generated star maps. I played the shit out of it and still have not yet beat a map. It doesn't take itself very seriously and has a mood somewhat similar to the SC games.

I highly recommended it.

FABIO - 2015-01-30

I played SPAZ for a couple hours and eventually quit. Looked around online and saw similar fan gripes with it. WAY too grindy. I remember there were multiple resource types, but only one was a bottleneck and you kept grinding to slooooowly accumulate it.

The main problem though was that the number and size of ships you could have in your fleet was hard locked to your story progression and it was way too long until you were allowed to have anything more than 2 small fighters that would open up interesting customization options. Plus you were constantly running into enemy fleets that were way too hard for your hard fleet cap, something you couldn't grind past.

I've been meaning to give it another try for years since everyone says it totally changes and becomes AMAZING once the zombies show up, but the thought of all that grinding keeps turning me off.

(I'm still bitter over buying Xeno Chronicles at full retail over hearing how amazing it was, but it was boring as shit and people said it only gets amazing after TWENTY hours. I guess Wii owners were just desperate for an RPG).

FABIO - 2015-01-30

The combat was very SC2 though. The only problem is, with all the options available, there was only one gun type (cannons?) that seemed worth it.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-30

Dunno when you played it, but there's built-in MOD support now for the game and most people give themselves more hangar space by default now. It doesn't penalize you in any way for doing it. It is a little grindy but it didn't really bother me.

fluffy - 2015-01-30

I always felt it was a huge disservice to SC1 and SC2 that everyone I knew only ever played melee mode. Some of them never even realized that there was a whole rest of the game!

When I played SC2 I'd often just let the AI control my ships during combat, because I preferred the exploration and strategy aspects. (Of course the AI does a really shitty job on some of the battles, especially the final Sa-Matra fight.)

FABIO - 2015-01-31

The only thing with the combat was the 3 ships that could totally break it: the flagship, Utwig ships, and the Spathi ships.

There were only about 2 ships in the entire game that could hope to beat an Utwig ship, and one of them was the old Chenjesu ships that never appeared in the single player. The Spathi ships were pretty much invincible once you mastered the hit and run with the torpedoes.

FUCKING Utwig though, the only downside to SC2. Beyond annoying, they were one of the four races in the game whose quest was mandatory and it took forever. For some reason they kept them for SC3 (while killing off the really fun Supox ships) and forced you to do the fix the Ultron quest all over again.

I remember in middle school a circle of friends passing this game along to the next guy as each one beat it, along with the starmap that changed hands so many time it wore out and had to be taped to poster board.

Another "like SC2" recommendation I got was Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages. The combat is very star control, and you can build your own ships using different parts like battletech mechs.
