I think it was what happens when you hit the ground running like Sonic did, sorry for the pun, and then lose momentum and fall into an invisible black hole, again sorry for the pun. Evilhomer can probably explain it better than me, but back in the 90s you saw Sonic everywhere and just because their franchise sucks now it doesn't mean people are gonna give it up because they made the conscious decision to choose and identify with it instead of Bubsy Gex or Klonoa. They identified with that branding the way some people actually hashtag #howdoyousonic because they identify with the two guys in the commercials.

Archie Comics published a Sonic the Hedgehog comic for many a year between Sonic's 16-bit heyday and the Second Coming of Spiky Blue Jesus on the Dreamcast. Said comic was based on one of the Sonic cartoons that aired way backinnaday, and very likely responsible for a specifically dysfunctional subset of my generation leaping down a rabbit hole and never coming back.

I know these parts, I recall the 90's and the Sega/Nintendo mascot rivalry. I also had the first issue of that Archie sonic comic because it came as a bonus with my subscription to the TMNT comic they published. I guess I could have got some fanboy to pay top dollar for that these days. But that comis, at least in it's first episode, seemed like some barely there Duck Tales plot, not something that would become it's own sexual disorder.

Is it just the crossover with furries that made Sonic so fucked? I'm really not talking about the games but rather the cultural what the fuckery that sonic has become.

There are many, many, many many furries whose entire involvement with the fandom is via Sonic the Hedgehog stuff.

I think it's just furries found a popular mascot they could relate to.

I have a Furry buddy who seems to be into nothing but Sonic adventures, Tails and the other characters. He was into Sonic long before knowing about Furries, so when he got on line, the Furry scene clicked for him. One can't underestimate his love for Sonic, as it has been for several decades now.

I'm really glad he's coming out of shell. He seems genuinely happy, and for the first time since he got on the internet, the people he's hanging out with (probably) aren't plotting to hurt him.
