I haven't paid attention to MDE in quite a while, since they kind of went off the rails a year or two back, but I heard they had an Adult Swim pilot or something that got pulled for political reasons, I didn't realize it was also a COMEDY TURF WAR.

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-12-11

When you say it was "political", that's kind of true... in the sense that MDE's style is such that it's difficult for people to discern if it's satire or not. They didn't actually do this, but as an example, if you're going to have a guy dressed up as Hitler saying Hitler type stuff to a crowd of people dressed as Nazi's doing the Nazi salute, then you better make damn sure there's some kind of joke or obvious marker for satire in there somewhere.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-11

I've got to say, looking in to this now I'm seeing that the sentiment against their show seems to be coming almost entirely from Buzzfeed and its readers, and that definitely makes me inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, because Buzzfeed is awful and my personal experience with Buzzfeed writers in real life is that they will pretty much make up anything if it will get them attention and CLICKS. I wrote up a whole long description about my most memorable IRL run-in with a Buzzfeed writer but no matter how vague I made it there was still more identifying details than I'd like, which is too bad because it is ridiculous and included threats of LAWSUITE AND PUBLIC SHAMING ON BUZZFEED for following federal regulations that required us to block web sites the FCC has determined "may contain adult material" on our public wifi, of which Buzzfeed is one therefore we were literally Orwellian grade censors for following the regulation and denying our visitors Buzzfeed access without having to resort to their smartphone data plans (not exaggerating a bit, and that was taken to our executive director, who has the misfortune of a personal full open door policy where anyone can walk in to his office off the street and talk to him if he's not in a meeting or on the phone).

Point is, MDE seem to have truly become what they once pretended to be but also I don't trust Buzzfeed on anything so I still have no real opinion here.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-11

I saw Sam do "his last standup show" back in maybe 2009 or 10 and it was pretty great, and I give him the benefit of the doubt a lot, but the last two years or so it really feels like the dummy is giving the orders now, you know?

William Burns - 2016-12-11

The persecution complex he's got going on is a dead giveaway that he's the real deal.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-11

OH I have no doubt that there's a real (informal) comedy blacklist and he's on it, but yeah, I suspect he's probably not in character that much anymore.

Xenocide - 2016-12-11

I wonder who else is on it? Thinking of names off the top of my head, we haven't heard much from Michael Richards since a certain incident a few years back. But then it's not like his post-Seinfeld career was exactly setting the world on fire.

Actually, if there is a comedy blacklist, it's probably mostly composed of people whose careers were on shaky ground anyway, since I imagine the big stars have enough clout to ignore it. Bill Cosby was still touring for months after the allegations began pouring out, for instance.

15th - 2016-12-11

OZ, BUZZFEED is absolute trash. They certainly seem very vindictive. Before the BUZZFEED hit piece Mr. Hyde fucked with that same writer in an interview. He told him "he'd never work for the New York Times" ect. So, to imagine this guy was pathetic enough to later try to get Hyde's show pulled is not that far fetched. He wrote that World Peace had subliminal swastikas for Christs' sake.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-11

Xenocide, the Barbarian Brothers are on it according to Peter Palpin.

Anyhow, I'm not talking about a literal blacklist, I'm talking about the dynamics that exist in every scene large and small (and TV comedy is most definitely just a big, profitable scene) wherein if the wrong person doesn't like you for whatever reason, you're suddenly invisible in that world. Whether the reason is legitimate or not in any given situation is a separate thing.

Shit, that's even happened to me once, on a smaller scale. Made an obvious, throwaway joke to a guy who booked a lot of shows around Boston at the time and it turns out he had recently misappropriated funds from a scholarship started in the name of a mutual friend of ours and what I thought was an obvious joke actually cut a little close to home for him, so suddenly I went from being a founder of his favorite band in the city to a nonperson in that scene until he left town a year later and his brother took over his role and things went back to normal.

Things are even worse in Rhode Island, although I haven't been on the receiving end of it myself as far as I know, but I've definitely heard plenty of stories about systematic shunning of people by "the scene" and have seen people literally leave town over it more than once.

It's not formally organized, it's not a conspiracy, it's just a common human group dynamic and of course someone like Sam Hyde whose whole M.O. is to be abrasive and confrontational (leaving aside whether he's serious or not, whether it's funny or not, etc.) is going to make enemies in the business.

15th - 2016-12-11

Ugh

15th - 2016-12-11

whoops, wrong spot.

baleen - 2016-12-12

The fact that Hyde is now the head cock of people who think /pol and /r are funny makes me not give a shit about him anymore.

He had so much potential. Now he's just a bitter, dimebag Sacha Baren Cohen, without the character acting and with a genuine hatred of Jews.

Xenocide - 2016-12-11

Bullshit description. Tim never pushed to get anyone cancelled, and it's absurd to think that a showrunner has the authority to tell network execs what shows to kill. Sam, like a lot of alt-right babymen, just needs someone to blame for his personal failures.

Five stars for the part where Trump supporter Sam starts whining that "I CAN'T AFFORD HEALTH INSURANCE!"

15th - 2016-12-11

I'm a fan of their stuff. It's not that I think it's often that brilliant or clever, but the majority of indie comedy is boring and toothless.

As far as his "true" political opinions go, I'd wager I don't agree with them and I don't give a shit.

It is an interesting story though, because their ratings were good but the network pulled it do to internal pressure and complete bullshit fabricated by BUZZFEED that was later regurgitated by other shitty news outlets until it seemed real enough.

Bottom line is that the "cutting edge/subversive" comedy network caved to pressure to cleanse the one show that wasn't in sync with its unspoken liberal consensus. I think that is lame as heck.

Chancho - 2016-12-11

Tim is on record as saying "if you support MDE, call and tell the network. If you don't support MDE, call and tell the network."

Sam Hyde works with openly anti-Semitic and white Nationalist people for his Youtube MDE stuff. This is way, way beyond just being a Trump supporter.

Sam Hyde is heavily involved with pizzagate, one of it's biggest supporters and promoters.

The guy is also a HUUUUUUUUGE asshole. He accused Patton Oswalt of killing his wife and has a long, long list of other baseless, personal attacks on people.

He also cries like a bitch whenever anyone calls him out on his lies and bullshit.

15th - 2016-12-11

>>Sam Hyde works with openly anti-Semitic and white Nationalist people for his Youtube MDE stuff. This is way, way beyond just being a Trump supporter.

Really? What do you mean?

15th - 2016-12-11

I mean, a lot of his fans that comment on his videos are fucking awful. I've never noticed any kind of engagement with them though.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-11

Really? You mean Sam Hyde was hurt by the promulgation of an inaccurate news story? THIS IS SERIOUS! I'M VERY CONCERNED!

Chancho - 2016-12-11

>Really? What do you mean?

ugh*

yogarfield - 2016-12-12

I still think he is trolling, but maybe it's like how professional wrestlers start bringing their persona home with them?

I dunno, I've gone without the internet for most of the year and am a happier person for doing so.

That guy - 2016-12-13

yogarfield, you picked a great year for that. 5 for you.

Doc Victor - 2016-12-11

I am loathe to accept a politicized Tim Heidecker but I don't doubt for a second that Judd Apatow would throw in to get MDE taken off the air.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-12-11

Live by the sword, die by the sword. If you can't take the financial hit if your "edgy" comedy can't survive the marketplace, maybe don't take the risk.

betamaxed - 2016-12-11

Agree with this. Getting tired of the coddled untalented comedians who think they should get a pass on everything they do. Lenny bruce got arrested for obscenity in the 60s and this pasty fat ass cries about SJWs.

SolRo - 2016-12-11

Rant about SJWs demanding safe spaces, then cry about not having a shitty comedian safe space.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-12-11

We already have a shitty comedian safe space, it's called Saturday Night Live.

SolRo - 2016-12-12

OH ZING!

You're ready to be a Fox News commentator CN!

Maggot Brain - 2016-12-11

What a way to end the show! Don't they make a lot of the adult swim shows down in Georgia due to some sweet tax breaks? Ironically the big tax breaks that some prescribe to large corporations are not allotted to individuals. If there was only some way to get health care through the states that is backed by the federal government, kind of like a credit union, but for health care. Never mind, that idea is stupid.

Any who, this is a list of when and when it is not funny to dress up as Hitler (when you are a white man)

Dressing up as Hitler in a White neighborhood, not funny.
Dressing up as Hitler in a African American neighborhood, somewhat funny.
Dressing up as Hitler in a Asian American neighborhood, funny.
Dressing up as Hitler in a retirement home may be the funniest thing ever.
Dressing up as Hitler in a Jewish neighborhood, not funny.
Dressing up as Hitler in a Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, somewhat funny.

PlusDome - 2016-12-12

Hitler & Nazi uniforms are camp as fuck and in that context pretty much always funny. Dressing up like a neo-nazi hardman or palling around with White Supremacists is about as funny as the "joke" of pointing a loaded gun at someone....

Lord_Crocodilicus - 2016-12-11

Here's an article Sam wrote about all this

http://dailycaller.com/2016/12/09/adult-swim-fired-me-for-supp orting-donald-trump-heres-how-it-went-down/

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-11

Yeah that is pretty much a mess.

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-12-11

Look at the comments.

Suppose for a second that Hyde's comedy really is innocuous and that the people he works with aren't white nationalists, the kind of crowd he draws is justification enough to drop him like sack of festering shit.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-11

Oh yeah, I'm not saying that what happened isn't completely predictable or that his fans aren't awful or that I particularly care for much he's done in a while, I think I made that amply clear.

That guy - 2016-12-13

Adult Swim can run a popularity contest all they want, as far as I'm concerned.

I'll worry about Buzzfeed and SJWs fucking up comedy when it's actual comedians, and I do complain about them all the time. But you have to have a shred of talent and know where a punchline punches to be a comedian.

Spaceman Africa - 2016-12-11

For a guy big about free market capitalism he sure is mad when the invisible hand cancels his show.

That guy - 2016-12-13

for once we agree

StanleyPain - 2016-12-11

heidecker didn't do shit to get the show cancelled, he just said he thought it was shit. The show getting cancelled was more likely because of the shit that Mike Lazzo was taking over being a fucking idiot and thinking that Adult Swim should devote broadcast time to a show whose only joke is pretty much literally "LOL SJWS AND TRANS PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS" Also, a few people quit because of the show.

For the record, I used to be a big MDE fan. But, as I predicted a few years ago (and my comments here bear this out), they went down the "LOL I AM SO IRONIC AT BEING A DUMB HOMOPHOBE, RACIST, MISOGYNISTIC REDDIT TROLL" route to where it became their literal *identity* that now they are the monster they themselves pretended to be. I watched a few episodes of their show and the funny stuff was of course totally cancelled out by their constant insistence on making fun of minorities where the joke wasn't even that they were making a point...they were just blowing their little dog whistles to their dipshit reddit/MRA-sphere shithead fans. I knew this was going to happen when Sam Hyde's whole stand-up act became "HAW HAW LEMME SEE IF I CAN OFFEND GAY PEOPLE" years back and he basically stopped actually writing material. It's a shame.

SolRo - 2016-12-12

larry the cable guy and jeff dunham have shown that it's much easier to be a successful slightly-bigoted comic than a successful good comic.

hyde just doesn't get the "slightly" part.

Spaceman Africa - 2016-12-12

Sam Hyde got textbook irony poisoning.

That guy - 2016-12-13

I would say that there are certain types of jokes, that can be "HAHA lemme see if I can offend _____" from an otherwise good person/good comedian.
But it's just a quick "everybody's shit stinks" type of joke.

For instance if you were doing a routine satirizing people who get angry about marriage equality, you could end that routine with a line about how you can't wait for your friends to be able to get married, but you might have to leave their wedding as soon as the dancing starts because you don't want to see a bunch of incredible dancing to the faggiest music ever made.

Funny or not, the joke has like 5 angles to it. Only 1 of those angles says "the stereotypical gay guy's taste in music isn't the best and I refuse to not say that".
And I don't think liberal Puritanism is a constructive force on matters like this, or intersection-crap or any of that.

Shit talk from acceptance of other people's humanity is wildly different from shit talk from intolerance. Don't be tricked by me calling both of them 'shit talk'.

So there is a comedian's role in offending any group if that group thinks it is beyond ANY kind of ridicule, even if that ridicule doesn't really mean much. Anything else is fucking puritanism.

That guy - 2016-12-13

Also, it should be crystal clear by this point that I think Sam Hyde is a hack, and worse.

NewHeavenSockman - 2016-12-12

it seems a little weird to act like there's some sort of sinister conspiracy to crush your creative spirits when you got picked up for a season on cable television to begin with, maybe people just got sick of the 24/7 "i am being IRONIC" routine?

at any rate tim has alot of possible negative qualities but i doubt that feeling threatened by acts like MDE to the point of campaigning is one of them

That guy - 2016-12-13

I wouldn't blame him if he did.

Campaign for or against anything you please.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-12-12

Unfortunately, Heidecker has done such a good job at what he does, I can't tell if this was a real exchange or just another bit he's doing.

Waugh - 2016-12-30

it's real binro
