You know, I don't normally comment on anything to do with mental illness, and I don't really have anything profound to say...

I just don't understand the massive over-reaction to one guy having a psychotic episode. These matters are still not handled correctly, and I doubt it's going to change any time soon, and I mean it's going to take a really, really fucking long time to handle psychosis the way it should be handled.

The cops are the last people I want to be the first point of contact for someone having a psychotic episode, and they are still the state's first solution (read 'line of defense') in your country as they are here.

Although I agree with you, I have a lot of sympathy for the police in this situation. The behavior & reactions of psychotic people are, by definition, abnormal, so most of the cops' training is of limited value. Consequently, they don't really have the required techniques or knowledge to safely handle encounters with crazy people.

Keep in mind that it's not as simple as "Just don't fucking shoot the crazy person." Some mentally ill people are genuinely dangerous. And without the necessary training (which requires substantial investments in time & money), the cops don't know which kind of mentally ill person they're dealing with, so they can't how much force is required to subdue the person. (Or, in the case of non-violent techniques, the cops don't know which techniques might be effective.)
