I used to do volunteer work and one of the kids in the program was a beanie baby obsessive.

He had a collection (at the time) worth thousands of dollars. I think he was planning on using them for college money.

Have always been curious how that worked out for him.

They still make Beanie Babies, but they are more or less based on licensed characters like My Little Pony, Spongebob, Disney, etc.

I did a little searching to see if anyone was still collecting them and it seems like the new thing for Ty is something called Beanie Boos (imagine if Beanie Babies were designed by Margaret Keane and you have a pretty good idea of what they're like). There is an entire Youtube community of grade school kids showing of their collections of hundreds of Beanie Boos and they're fairly unsettling.

That's been around for a few years. You see it everywhere in the USA. The most likely inspiration was Aurora's YooHoos. In fact, Aurora tried to sue TY a few years ago for copyright infringement.

There's also TY Girlz, which are more or less Bratz knockoff!

All sorts of strange and odd and despicable and deranged behavior tends to occur around crazes like Beanie Babies - you would be surprised.

For instance, if I recall correctly during the height of the "COMICS ARE COLLECTIBLE" 1990s craze, during the Chromium Age of comics when there were Number #1 issues with special covers and other such books the RCMP busted up an organized gang in Quebec that was stealing these sort comics to sell them.

That part about the kids from troubled homes parents going ape shit is equal parts hilarious and depressing.

It seems people assumed the same thing would happen with fidget spinners...like there was some long-term investment market with those things, because I keep seeing people all over online marketplace ads, classifieds, etc. all desperately trying to sell "collectable" fidget spinners for crazy amounts of money.
