Liking OR disliking pop culture is not a substitute for a personality.

exy - 2020-11-15

That word salad needed to be tossed around my brain a few times before I could parse it all.

"Blinking at their harmonic rate disrupts their holo-protocols, creating a reference loop that shuts them down."

5 for teaching me that Michelle Yeoh is also a master of blink-fu

Lef - 2020-11-15

she can blink at me all day.

Hazelnut - 2020-11-15

Haven't watched Discovery. Is it generally that shitty?

jfcaron_ca - 2020-11-15

Yeah, just lots of angry fighting, lasers pew pew, and corruption of every ideal and principle the Federation or the show itself ever espoused.

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-11-15

Well the first season wasn't very promising because they were trying to basically copy other successful scifi franchises, mainly Battlestar Galactica. But not Star Trek...which i kind of bewildering because this show doesn't have any characters to really root for. Burnham is a Mary Sue. They were sued for plagiarism, rightfully so, for stealing the tardigrade plotline from a video game. So they just didn't try to make a unique show. They looked at a bunch of other scifi stuff and said "Hey, let's make something similar to that."

And that happens a lot. It feels almost schizophrenic at times because it just can't decide what kind of show it wants to be. The plotline itself?

Mushrooms...actual mushrooms...are used to create wormholes through several universes and yes that is as stupid as it sounds.

jfcaron_ca - 2020-11-15

On the plus side they are pretty good about including genuine characters that are female, queer, people or colour, or otherwise just not standard cis white male dudes. Like it's an explicit goal for the writers, too bad it kinda fails at doing what I like from Star Trek, cuz I would love genuine Star Trek that is more diverse and inclusive.

exy - 2020-11-15

It's almost like the creators/producers/funders of the last couple ST shows want to steer this universe away from Rodenberry's idealistic vision of a post-"ism" society.

jfcaron_ca - 2020-11-15

God forbid people have an optimistic vision of the future for humanity. =(((

exy - 2020-11-15

^^^ truth

What am I talking about, "last couple of shows," not including the whole JJ Abrams movie-insult

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-16

Disco has a lot going for it, but you need to meter your expectations. Its highs aren't as high as TNG, but then again I haven't seen anything on Disco that's as bad (even at the time) as Drunk Irish Farmers, Space Blacks, Riker's Clipshow, or Geordi's Mom is a Fire Demon. To name just a few.

And that's TNG, the relative slam-dunk of all Trek. I've been going through Voyager a bit lately and found many episodes that are not only offensive in their themes (immigrants are replacing our crew, they're stealing our jobs!), but are just dull, wandering, disjointed flatlines. Zero attention to plotting, zero engagement with the premise of the show, zero character development for anyone not wearing a catsuit. Voyager had some highs, especially it's two-parters, but if I had to roll the dice on watching either a random episode of it or Discovery, I'd trust Discovery for an hour's entertainment.

The thing is, after TNG's success nobody had known what to do with Star Trek except Ira Steven Behr.

SolRo - 2020-11-16

Just watch Lower Decks if you absolutely have to watch a new Star Trek thing.

Nominal - 2020-11-17

Random episode? Discovery's whole thing is the bullshit Abrams/Kurtzman MYSTERY BOX Lost bullshit of a season long arc that will totally pay off this time we promise.

Claiming that not only is Discovery is not only better on average, but better for self contained episodes than 90s televised Trek? ...wha?

(it's also silly to take a 7 season long show and claim that since it had some bad episodes, that it's on par with an Alex Kurtzman vehicle. That's like calling American Dad equal to or better than Simpsons by pointing to The Tracy Ullman Show)

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-11-15

I love Michelle Yeoh but I fucking hate this show.

betamaxed - 2020-11-15

they're on the 3rd reboot of this show because it's hot dog shit

duck&cover - 2020-11-15

I go blinky, because you're stinky.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-16

Data once used a blinking flashlight to reprogram the bridge crew's minds, erasing the brainwashing that had been put there by an ADDICTIVE VIDEOGAAAAME.

And I don't mean he used a "neural engram recorder" that was really just a blinky flashlight prop. No, in the fiction of the show he actually used a blinking flashlight to reprogram Picard & co.'s minds.

This is your daily reminder that while it's true Disco is hokey, we tend to forgot how hokey Trek always was.

The troubled with Disco for me comes down to it's aggressive, shouty editing and its lack of interest in asking "what if...?" questions. That sweet, sweet Twilight Zone influence is long gone.

SolRo - 2020-11-16

Well even that silly scenario is more believable.

First, a video game brainwashing (if you believe it’s possible) would be done via blinking images.

Second, Data is a highly advanced android in the distant future. His vision should be fast enough to see every video display frame as a still image, and he’s generally shown to be smart and fast enough to solve very complicated problems.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-16

There's a flashlight in the kitchen drawer. Please tell what I need to do to erase your comment from my mind.

SolRo - 2020-11-16

Hit yourself over the head with to. Repeat until desired results achieved.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-16

I did it just like you said, thanks. And the only side-effect is now I like Discovery more than ever!

themilkshark - 2020-12-13

I hit myself with a flashlight on the head, and now I'm able to retire at 37

Nominal - 2020-11-16

It takes some bonkers contrarian revisionism to think this show is even close to TNG.

themilkshark - 2020-11-16

So disgusting to me that I hear the same criticisms of the Star Trek series over and over, while people who are passionate about Sci Fi type and vlog and even make money complaining for hours on end...

But they don't write new Sci Fi
They don't buy new Sci Fi
They don't Kickstart new Sci Fi
They don't help make new fans of Sci Fi

They wait for Daddy to deliver the Star Trek. Gross.

Mister Yuck - 2020-11-17

You know what, you're absolutely right. I will quit my job and write a sci-fi show to compete with Star Trek. Anything less would be disgusting.

themilkshark - 2020-12-13

Please do, I can't take any more reboots. I just wanna see another Orville pop up, maybe with Gilliam leanings instead of fucking Family Guy
