John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-12-20

It's an amazing story, sure, but for me, the most amazing thing is that autopsy photo at around (38:19). Not only is Mike Malloy looking pretty good for someone who has been dead and in the ground, unembalmed, for a week; he looks fairly handsome for a man of sixty.

Another shorter, more funny, version of this story:

My version is certainly long and meandering, but after a cursory look at this and other versions of the story, I decided to embrace the meander.

My submission is a documentary made by an Irish filmmaker, an accomplished athlete, incidentally, who is also named Malloy. About half of the film is in Gaelic (I'm guessing. It could be in Hebrew for all I know) His subject is a lot more than a botched murder plot. He talks about the immigrant experience, and New York in the Prohibition Era. He interviews historians, forensic experts, and old new york characters who have a connection to events, for example, a Bronx mortician, whose father attended the wedding of one of the hapless killers. He visits the sites where the events took place, including the room in Sing Sing Prison where the State killed them so much more efficiently, using the electric chair.

It's a pretty good documentary, but it's a little longer than it needs to be. You might want to check out DC's first.

I got the idea to look for this from a really terrific Documentary, THE POISONER'S HANDBOOK from PBS's THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, about the pioneering Medical Examiner who struggled to bring modern forensic science to city law enforcement. Everybody loves some kind of True Crime, from Richard III to YouTube podcasts, but the best true crime is historical, and no one does that better than PBS. You can find documentaries about Leopold and Loeb, The Lindbergh kidnapping, The assasinations of Lincoln, McKinley, and JFK, Bonnie and Clyde, the Klan, Prohibition, etc.

I believe that I submitted this one a few years ago. Don't remember what happened with that. I'll check.
