From what I know of Star Wars (the movies and playing KotOR) Jedi are just incredibly dangerous to have around. Like, oops I had an emotion and now I'm a magically powered mass murderer. Dudes were falling to the dark side and fucking stuff up all the time. And the whole Jedi ascetic code was not really followable by a normal person, which was a big part of it.
