it rhymes decreased & increased -> POOR RHYMING!
My version...
"The population is lately deceased,
So my chances are greatly increased,"
retains the increased and greatly rhymes
also lately is a little pun, cus it means recently, but also can mean dead, eg the late mr jenkins
