Lawrence Welk had long been a bastion of fading 50s style whiteness. They're focus had always been polka and easy listening. The show started in the 50s and was relatively unchanged into the 80s. I remember my parents watching the reruns on our PBS station.

Growing up my lovely elderly neighbors only watched three things: golf, Highway to Heaven and Lawrence Welk.

They also fed me Little Debbie cakes I wasn't supposed to have so I would sit through golf, Highway to Heaven and Lawrence Welk.

I will never forget eating swiss rolls to big band performances of ball room dancing. I am listening to a Benny Goodman record as I type this.
