He's not correct. There have been full 3D ports of the Doom engine for almost 20 years now. It's the sprites that never quite looked right in 3D. But let's remind ourselves, they never quite looked right in the original game either.

The voxel doom mod is to my knowledge the best attempt to take the low res sprites and to make them 3D.
