The Blood Omen/Soul Reaver series of games.

A big part of the game is questioning whether or not free will actually exists, especially when an elder god is manipulating everything and everyone.

There's a scene where Kain, an ancient vampire, is trying to convince Raziel, one of his former vampire lieutenants who became a spectral wraith after Kain had him executed (long story) to join him in fighting the elder god. Kain has been using an artifact called the Chronoplast to move through time and play a game of chess against the elder god, seeing who can set the pieces in just the right way to beat the other.

Kain tells Raziel that you can flip a coin and get heads or tails, but if you flip it enough times, the coin will eventually land on its edge.

I think we were supposed to get another game to wrap up the story, but the last game ended on a cliffhanger with Kain having finally succeeded in getting Raziel on his side and feeling he finally got the coin to land on its edge, meaning the elder god's control may have finally been broken.
