They originally offered the part of Neo to Will Smith, put he turned it down in favor of "Wild Wild West"

Ponder that.

Scynne - 2007-12-17

I vote Reeves a smarter man

kingarthur - 2007-12-17

D'oh!

kingarthur - 2007-12-17

That said, the list of actors who passed up on parts in this movie is kinda impressive. Chow Yun fat turning down Morpheus and all.

Aelric - 2007-12-17

jet li was slated to the the original, original neo, but he flipped the offer and ended up doing the one to console himself

kingofthenothing - 2010-05-27

Yeah, the list of people who turned down being Neo is pretty sad, sometimes. I think Val Kilmer (who was on the list) would have been great - he turned down roles as Neo and Morpheus. Sadly, Sean Connery turned down both the Matrix AND Lord of the Rings. I happen to think Sean Connery would have made a great hobbit.

Russel Crowe as Morpheus probably would have fucked the whole thing up. Samuel L. Jackson as Morpheus would have been pretty interesting. Gary Oldman as Morpheus would have been wild, too, I imagine.

I think the one that breaks my heart the most is Jean Reno turning down the role of Agent Smith so he could do Godzilla.

Maybe parallel universes exist where these people were in the Matrix and took different turns down the rabbit hole.

kingofthenothing - 2010-05-27

here's something that blew my mind though - Keanu Reeves supposedly turned down Charlie Sheen's role in Platoon. Not sure if I'm buying that.

kingofthenothing - 2010-05-27

"Mickey Rourke turned down playing Connor MacLeod in Highlander? Noooooooo!!!!"

Monchiles Monchiles - 2007-12-17

After having seen the movie several times, I still have no idea what the hell half the images mean.

NoCode - 2007-12-17

Man, The Matrix was so fun. Too bad they crapped out those other two movies and did them so poorly. And they waited so long to make them that Trinity looked like a Skeksi in the last one.

I remember seeing this trailer in the theaters and getting a sci-fi nerd boner for it. I can't believe that was 8 years ago.

FABIO2 - 2007-12-17

A sure sign of pseudo hipster snobbery: declaring that the first Matrix movie sucked too.

DrVital - 2007-12-17

I wish that was the cause.

Unfortunately the second two films have ruined the first film for me forever.

Well, that and the rifftrax.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2007-12-17

I remember seeing this commercial during the superbowl. And frankly, it was a lot more awesome back when you only knew what half the images meant.

Love the 'Cult Classic' tag too. Aren't you a funny guy.

Roachbud - 2007-12-17

One thing I never got about this movie is why the machines couldn't just build nuclear plants, coal plants or get solar from space. You'd think that would work better than a few billion human-potato clocks.

theFlu - 2007-12-17

they're all vindictive fucks

kingarthur - 2007-12-17

Good answer

theFlu - 2007-12-17

I've never seen this show - who's that white looking Japanese guy in the glasses?

Senator_Unger - 2007-12-17

My parents went to go see this in the theater and they said they fell asleep during it. I don't know if that reflects poorly on the movie for being boring or if it reflects poorly on my parents for being unable to stay awake for more than 2 hours.

baleen - 2008-02-14

"cult classic"
Solro, you are such a faggot.

Gwago - 2008-03-01

Wow, that was actually more satisfying than the actual movie!

kingofthenothing - 2010-05-27

"Kurt Cobain turned down the role of Lance in Pulp Fiction. The part went to Eric Stoltz."

Alright, now the Internet is just fucking with me.
