The CNBC video drops the McCain gaffe about two minutes in and switches to less interesting campaign coverage. The video linked in the above comment is fascinating.

I think this video is a nice slice of the truly black, vile nature of the Republican party now. For years they have collectively chanted the "stay the course" party line and absolutely refused, flat out, to try and pull troops out of Iraq to any measurable degree. (and, contrary to McCain's continual suggestion, we are NOT at pre-surge troop levels..not even close....)

Now that the voice of troop widthdrawal (mainly in the form of Obama's campaign) has started to get massive amounts of support from major players within the war itself, despite disagreements on the specifics and timetables, the Republicans are now doing a classic "we have always been at war with East Asia" move and pretending like ALL ALONG this was THEIR idea, they had just been thinking of how best to implement it. It is truly disgusting. It's one thing when we have a few Republicans who admit they have changed their mind and think they were wrong before, but this shit speaks to the very CORE of everything wrong with the GOP today.

This actually worries me somewhat. Supposing McCain's statement on CBS was a gaffe and not deliberate. CBS's burying it - maybe for some feeling of "respect?" - does nothing but keep McCain's potentially very REAL conditions due to age out of the spotlight.

Someone, somewhere, believes 'because of this, we'll never have to go back'. Five for that childlike naivete' that may doom us all.

I'd be happy if the news stopped being bought and sold and stopped trying to force an opinion on me and went back to just telling me what happened this week and left it up to me to figure out what I thought of it.

I think it's great that the local news stood up and said there was no way in hell the campaign would keep a stranglehold on the interview conditions. That's been going on for eight years too long.

Also, Katie Couric was pretty much first in line to gleefully throw Dan Rather under the bus.
CBS official explanation as of today is that they simple trimmed the interview and did not "insert an answer where there was none" which they clearly did.
