what made this movie GREAT was how it documents such a small, pointless endeavor into what, to the people in it, is the MOST AMAZING and THRILLING pinnacle of human existence.
The "kill screen coming up folks" scene does this very well. I'm sure the thousands of cars that drove by Fun Spot contained people who were either unaware of this event or unaware of a "kill screen" on Donkey Kong...or even cared.
You know, even more important than "Fuck Billy Mitchell" is the very important statement of "Fuck Walter Day!" (him being the guy in the referee shirt)
It's one thing to have the obnoxious asshole with the America tie who is desperate to maintain some sort of bizarro-fame, but it's problematic when the governing body is actually that biased and plays such clear favorites. Essentially, the whole thing wouldn't have even been a problem if Walter Day hadn't been such a bought-out cunt.
i dunno. i kind of saw it as Walter being sort of a pushover, but always with the best interests of the game in mind. Billy Mitchell just took advantage of the guy's gaping insecurities (which happens to be a prerequisite for "Video Game Referee") and I thought that made it even sweeter when Mitch ate Weibe's shit.
in conclusion: Walter = Sympathetic Loser
Billy = Shit-Eating Prick
It amuses me endlessly that all these guys were replaced by Japanese arcade players who spend their entire lives dedicated to getting world records in 2d shooters.
I don't really buy the story that the film makers greatly distorted the truth to get a good story. There's only so much ridiculousness that can be explained away by context.
