Technically, it's not really Daft Punk per se...Thomas Bangalter is doing the soundtrack on his own and it's being billed as Daft Punk. This thrills me not so much because I really like Daft Punk (I kind of don't) but because it's rare these days to see a movie get an artist whose actually a REAL electronic music artist to do a primarily electronic score.

Thomas Bangalter's previous score for a film called Irreversible was pretty crappy. I'm predicting this score will be better, but probably well within the realm of Hollywood movie music cliche. If they wanted someone more 'real', they should have went with Richard D. James or Wendy Carlos (or both together) - but those names don't sell tickets.

I'm assuming somewhere early on, when this was known as Tron 2.0 back in late 90s before the entire project was scrapped and turned into the video game, Carlos was probably approached to work on it but likely turned it down. She has never made an official statement about it (which is rare given her usually candid, open nature about everything she's working on), but I would assume the decades long legal mess she had trying to get back her original Tron masters might have left a bad taste in her mouth with Disney. Also, she hasn't really done a commission in years upon years.

I haven't seen all of it, but it seems kind of entertaining. When it came out, probably in a "Whoa! Cutting edge computer graphics!" way though in retrospect I enjoyed it as a "Whoa! Early computer graphics!" history lesson.

Funny, because there's actually a bunch of people from the original working on this one. Certainly more than you would ever see in most of today's "edgy" updates of old cult classic movies.

If you were a kid then the light cycles alone were the coolest fucking thing you ever saw. Holy shit me and my nerd friend used to run around playing Tron. The arcade game was good too, and all the console games.

No, Tron was campy trash with bad acting that had the fortune of having a unique visual style and coming out at just the right time. Which is exactly why I'm excited for a sequel.
