Surprise reveal: someone who doesn't like evolution doesn't understand even the most fundamental concepts about it.

Sounds like Glenn Beck's never been to a monster truck rally.

takewithfood - 2010-10-25 Half-monkeys I'll believe, but science has yet to explain Steve Buscemi. Is he the same species as Willem Dafoe and David Bowie, or is he something else altogether?
|
spikestoyiu - 2010-10-25 Bowie's a spider from Mars and everyone knows that.

Just remember he's wearing magical evil-proof undergarments while saying this.

Fie stars for willful ignorance. Is there anything we can do about this heaping helping of nonsense and crap being on the air? At all? There's a right to free speech and then there's just flat-out poisoning the well.

jangbones - 2010-10-25 Actually this stuff will make America a better place in the long run.
The longer the right has NewsCorp's platform to propagandize, the further and further they move away from any semblance of reality. The worst thing that can happen to these people is themselves.
The right isn't the right any more. Compare their rhetoric from twenty years ago to now and a lot of important positions have devolved. Now their great, central thinkers are Limbaugh, Palin and Beck, posturing and crazy populists, and they can only drag the mainstream so far into crazyland before the baby boomers start dying off.
Yes, there are a lot of stupid people in America but there are a lot of rational people too. Sure they can be misinformed and prejudiced and gullible but they also look at a chair and see a chair and not a black muslim with a knife.
Look at it this way; at some point today, one right winger will read Andrea Peyser's column in the New York Post decrying the "narrow minded racism that rules" NPR and realize that her entire concept is absolutely ridiculous and has no relation to reality in the slightest. And it will take a long time and some crazy shit will happen but America will slowly start to realize how much of the right wing information for the past twenty years has only been populist propaganda.
I'm certain of it.

This type.
Whenever confronted that one of their decisions inflicted collateral damage they'll automatically drop the "Fuck em, its survival of the fittest."
But they don't believe in evolution. no sir! They just selectively invoke Darwin when it suits them.

Spoonybard - 2010-10-25 It's Spencer explicitly paraphrasing Darwin

On the plus side, irony might not be as dead as history.

oddeye - 2010-10-25
There is so much evidence for god creating everything that it doesn't need evidence because it's self-evident, or something.
I think the main problem ordinary people have with evolution is that because the timescales involved are so mind-blowingly huge that it becomes hard for them to visualise it in action.
|
CharlesSmith - 2010-10-25 I think the problem ordinary people have with evolution is that they think their uninformed suppositions are equal to the totality of human science.
|
Rovin - 2010-10-25 I think a lot of the problem is species narcissism, really. We talk and wear clothes and have cars and internet and opposable thumbs, surely we can't be just another variant species - or just another form of animal. We must be SPECIAL. It's a mindset relatively similar to the old "Earth is the center of the Universe" idea. We MUST be the most important, because we are US, dammit.

My favourite part is when he claims there was no controversy about the world being flat or round. He must imagine it went like this:
Popular Masses: The world is flat!
Pythagoras: Actually, I think it's round.
Popular Masses: He's right!
