Part of the reason the dancing looks so goofy in the Kino release is that they're playing the film back at 25fps, when it was originally shot closer to 16fps. At one point, I ripped the DVD into Sony Vegas and slowed the whole thing down, and everything looks SO much better - but it also adds a good 30 minutes to the run time.

On one hand, it's great that you're getting each and every frame, but it would be great if they offered a second version that's slowed down, interpolation or no.

I bought the restored DVD that Kino put out, but after learning about the depths of copyright bullshit that surround this film (short version: its copyright expired, the film was released into public domain, then *had its copyright restored*, removing it from public domain, which is absurd), I'll be downloading the more recent HD release of this 85 year old film.

I actually posted an unlisted clip on YouTube (ID# t4I1Bqms9TU) of a scene played back at a lower frame rate. The shutter lag is noticeable, but everyone's movement looks more natural. I haven't actually watched this in a year or two, and looking at it now, I might have slowed it down a hair too much, but I'd rather it be too slow than too fast.

The movie that brought Art Deco to the wider world. I'm really looking forward to seeing the full film when it comes to a theater in town during July.
