This is very disturbing to me. You'd never hear someone in the 1960s saying that "The military isn't about race, we shouldn't even talk about it. If you're black, keep it to yourself."
I think it's a horrible divide. We aren't making the military ABOUT gays. We're including them openly and saying "we won't discriminate against you based on your ethnicity or sexual orientation."
Why is this such a hard topic to wrestle with for republicans and religious folk? They're saying that soldiers have to be gay now. They're not saying that it's more important. They're simply acknowledging that, "Yes, there are soldiers fighting for your freedom that like to bum each other."
I think they don't like that, mainly because it would mean that they have "sinners" fighting for their "christian country."
Dumb fucks...

Might as well start sending castrated soldiers to wars if they are worried about sexuality in the army.

I like that these debates have taught us much more about the tea party voters than the tea party candidates.
So far it's fuck the homos, let the uninsured die and hooray for executions. All issues they claim to have nuanced positions on belied by their hate filled mob calls.

When he says "sex", does he actually mean sexuality or does he mean the act of fornicating, as in gays in the military will not stop fucking each other? Just kidding, I know the answer.

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-09-26 Really, someone ought to tell US soldiers that if Mr. Santorum is elected president, he plans to make having sex illegal if you are an active duty soldier. Should prove a popular position to hold, or so I gather from the crowd response.

chumbucket - 2011-09-26 Knowing how detailed the Army is, there is likely a Field Manual To Safe Sex somewhere.

Just what we need. More discussion on social issues when the country is in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the great depression.
|
jangbones - 2011-09-26 Social issues are what keeps the poor voting Republican.
Meanwhile, Republicans never actually LEGISLATE social issues, they just keep cutting taxes and regulation to benefit the rich. And they justify that by trumpeting an economic theory that was disproven thirty years ago.
Seriously, check the record and compare how many laws proposed, championed, and passed by the GOP concern economic issues and how many concern social issues.
This ain't exactly shocking, groundbreaking information I am spewing here.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-09-26 It would be to Republicans, if (1) facts permeated their consciousness and (2) they aren't one of the wealthy beneficiaries of policy.
They can't even wrap their brains around the fact that they had Bush in the White House, a GOP-controlled congress, and one of the most conservative Supreme Courts in history, and yet they made no move to overturn Roe v. Wade beyond a few restrictions here and there. If abortion went away, so would a ton of their support, and they know it. Same for a fuckton of other issues they claim to want to "fix" while clutching their bibles even tighter, their base not realizing they're being had.

My stars are for the "which is all volunteer" remark. I don't know why, but that really pushed this over into surrealism for me. It was like I had to wonder, "What does all-volunteer have to do with it?," while trying to process the rest of the Santorum dribbling out of his speech-hole.
