John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-16
I was looking for signs of the American version I remembered when I found this. The American version of this ran in 2004. There was no narration from Mr. Humphries of "Are You Being Served", and it wasn't nearly as campy, and after a huge promotion by Fox was canceled after only 4 episodes.
It was added to the Friday schedule midseason in a block with a show called WONDERFALLS, which was so original and so good that in spite of ALSO being canceled after 4 episodes it still has a fan base 10 years later. It's certainly arguable that having the American PLAYING IT STRAIGHT as a lead-in was the albatross that doomed WONDERFALLS, but Fox also scheduled it against JOAN OF ARCADIA, a superficially similar but inferior show.
I always thought that "Playing it Straight" failed on Fox because it managed to offend gays AND homophobes, but now that I've seen the successful British version, I have to conclude that it wasn't offensive enough.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-17 It was merely an allusion. He reminded me of Mr. H. Sorry to hear he passed, he was my favorite part of the show.

They're allowed to show dicks and man-asses on British public tv?
|
fluffy - 2014-06-16 Yes. A country that still is ruled by an old woman wearing a crown on the basis of her bloodline is more progressive than the United States.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-06-16 Huh. I was pretty amazed when I found out a year or two ago that they have no profanity rules (you can say fuck piss shit bitch ass tits, completely uncensored) but I had no idea nudity was allowed too.

Gay Witch Hunt is a great show! I love how they unironically use the term "gaydar" and perpetuate stereotypes by trying to out people for sissy behavior!
