The last Academy Awards was one of the lowest rated in its history. It was down almost 40% from the previous year. They just announced they are going to have a second best picture award for "best popular film" or "Best blockbuster" which is fucking hilarious.
ABC owns the rights to the Academy Awards for the next ten years and that's 75 million bucks per year (PER YEAR!) to broadcast them. Disney owns ABC and Marvel so hopefully Black Panther will also win 13 Oscars and go right up there with Titanic in the history books. Fuck you, art films with your "craft".
The worst part is the Oscsrs aren’t even going for art or craft half the time; they’re going for safe Oscar-bait. Maybe if they put risky fils up there it’s be remotely interesting.
The problem is that televised award shows have always been hard to watch. "The oscars are boring!" became a cliche around the mid seventies. And every year, there are more content choices. This has not only means something better to watch on Oscar Nights. It also means that television... and then cable... and then the internet.... and then streaming services... are getting more of the truly original content, while big studio theatrical features have been trying to be Star Wars for the past 40 years. So no one really cares about what movie is going to win.
This abomination is just one of many many disastrous or failed attempts to make the Academy awards something people will watch. They add new categories, more nominations, they get someone new and "edgy" to host...
Where they going for camp or parody~Did they tell anyone that they were going for satire? Does Rob Lowe's singing suck on purpose? I'm mean the dancing tables!
