CNN was always right wing, they just got the go-ahead to finally shed the 'center' part of 'center-right'.

There's only one demographic that still pays for cable television. Take a wild guess.

Cena_mark - 2023-05-16

I don't know anyone anywhere on the political spectrum who is a fan of CNN. It's just background noise. Same for MSNBC. The far right-wing cable news networks are the only ones that have dedicated fandoms. The right wants to believe that there are non far right cable news networks that exist as counters to Fox. This creates a paradox in which they mock CNN for their low ratings while also believing the entirety of the left watches it. This might have added to their inability to believe Trump lost the 2020 election. Similar to how they use lawn signs and bumper stickers as a metric, they can't believe Biden won when CNN's ratings are so low.

Crackersmack - 2023-05-16

Just wait until Trump is reelected and then you all will be back to bravely resisting fascism by making the correct media choices.

Cena_mark - 2023-05-16

Democracy dies in darkness.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

If Trump is reelected, my first media choice may be an AR-15.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

What? Crackersmack is predicting a Trump victory again? And when he wins this time, will you post a twenty hour laugh track video?

Crackersmack is the Cassandra of being wrong.

Crackersmack - 2023-05-17

We are ignoring covid this time John. Also the argument 'anything is better than Trump' kinda fizzled a bit over 4 years of Democrats pretending to be unable to do anything except arm nazis.

Jeriko-1 - 2023-05-16

Ah, so the mask finally drops eh? I think the word you are looking for is "If"

Jeriko-1 - 2023-05-16

Meant that as a reply to QuackerJack up there. 20 years and I still can't use this damned thing right,

Crackersmack - 2023-05-16

The only outcome that I am rooting for is for both Biden and Trump to die on the campaign trail, and I think it has a real possibility of happening inshallah.

Lef - 2023-05-16

5 for a video that shows how dumb and fascist AOC is. Free speach for me but not for thee!

My wish is that Bobby Kennedy kicks that bum Biden to the curb, and we end up with a Trump vs Bobby race.

And that the ashes of the CIA be scattered to the 4 winds.

A man can dream...

Crackersmack - 2023-05-16

If he started a speech with "The CIA killed my uncle and my father..." I would be all-in for him.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

My dream is that Lef will one day bother to look up "fascist".

Crackersmack - 2023-05-17

Yes everybody knows that fascism is when Trump says something rude.

Lef - 2023-05-17

Would you prefer totalitarian? AOC is a socialist totalitarian that distracts you with her big ol socialist titties.

You need to look at Mussolini for a modern example of corporations and the state working in lock step, controlling what is produced, both material and intellectual.

That means having an iron fist on what the media reports.

Under Mussolini, you did not parrot the party line you did not get your chicken and bag of corn meal.

That sure sounds like socialism, the state giving the plebs their daily crumb as long as their social credit score is acceptable. There is no freedom of expression or thought. First ammendment goes poof.

Can you wrap head around the fact that they were socialists? That their German neighbors were national socialists?

Sure, they hated communists, but they were still a form or socialism.

Don't like what Trump says, but respect his right to say it. AOC would tear the constitution to shreds to maintain her potkimin village.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

>>>Can you wrap head around the fact that they were socialists? That their German neighbors were national socialists?

Oh my god, one of these. Why don't you wrap your head around my dick?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

Jon Stewart said it's like saying that the People's Republic of China is run by Republicans.

To me, it sounds like Ron DeSantis going after Disney for criticizing "Don't Say Gay"

ashtar. - 2023-05-18

Historic Fascism was capital using state violence to defend its interests. Socialism, in actually occurring revolutions, used state violence to expropriate capital.

Spike Jonez - 2023-05-17

Read Umberto Eco and the 14 points of fascism and then shut the fuck up forever about trump not being a fascist, crackers.

Crackersmack - 2023-05-17

nah I don't have any use for a modern definition of fascism that boils down to 'fascism is when normie American republicans do republican shit republicanly'

when you look at how fascism is described by people that had to actually fight and defeat fascists in a war it's a lot more like corporate capture of government, and you can't escape that by voting for either of these two identical parties

Umberto Ecco on fascism:

https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1995/06/22/ur-fascism/

In 1942, at the age of ten, I received the First Provincial Award of Ludi Juveniles (a voluntary, compulsory competition for young Italian Fascists—that is, for every young Italian). I elaborated with rhetorical skill on the subject “Should we die for the glory of Mussolini and the immortal destiny of Italy?” My answer was positive. I was a smart boy.

I spent two of my early years among the SS, Fascists, Republicans, and partisans shooting at one another, and I learned how to dodge bullets. It was good exercise.

In April 1945, the partisans took over in Milan. Two days later they arrived in the small town where I was living at the time. It was a moment of joy. The main square was crowded with people singing and waving flags, calling in loud voices for Mimo, the partisan leader of that area. A former maresciallo of the Carabinieri, Mimo joined the supporters of General Badoglio, Mussolini’s successor, and lost a leg during one of the first clashes with Mussolini’s remaining forces. Mimo showed up on the balcony of the city hall, pale, leaning on his crutch, and with one hand tried to calm the crowd. I was waiting for his speech because my whole childhood had been marked by the great historic speeches of Mussolini, whose most significant passages we memorized in school. Silence. Mimo spoke in a hoarse voice, barely audible. He said: “Citizens, friends. After so many painful sacrifices … here we are. Glory to those who have fallen for freedom.” And that was it. He went back inside. The crowd yelled, the partisans raised their guns and fired festive volleys. We kids hurried to pick up the shells, precious items, but I had also learned that freedom of speech means freedom from rhetoric.

Crab Mentality - 2023-05-17

Wow, it's like Crackersmacked turned out to be the sack of shit trump voter I accused him of being!

Also notice he's following the textbook right wing troll trajectory- when confronted about just being here to argue without any points of his own, Cracker squealed like a little piggy for everyone to come and save him from mean ol' Crabby.

When nobody did, he just went "Fuck, I guess I didn't trick anyone into actually liking me. Oh well!" then just revealed himself to be one of the many hitler youth of 4chan or whatever.

As a bonus, Lef outed himself too! You two should go share a drano milkshake.

Lef - 2023-05-17

Welcome to the idiot club! Please don't pick on Nominal, he's a really good guy that tries hard.

Bonus for bringing me up out of nowhere. Bitch, I'm far from the only person who's schooled your election-denier FOX News bitchboy idiocy.

You little bitch.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

>>>Don't like what Trump says, but respect his right to say it. AOC would tear the constitution to shreds to maintain her potkimin village.

I finished sixth grade in 1970, and obviously, that qualifies me to explain the First Amendment to you.

The First Amendment includes Freedom of the Press, and that means that CNN has every right to choose to not put Trump on the air live.

The first Amendment also includes Freedom of Speech, which means that AOC can criticize CNN for choosing to put him on the air.

And Trump? Well, they say that freedom of speech doesn't give you the right to yell "Fire" in a crowded theater, and that's a pretty good analogy for what Trump has been doing all along. I'm not sure how that translates into actual law.

SolRo - 2023-05-17

Trump incites violence. That is explicitly not protected speech (until idiots like cracker let the judiciary get stacked by republican fascists)

Crackersmack - 2023-05-17

what do you mean "let the judiciary get stacked with republican fascists"?
bro that already happened. it happened when Obama left hundreds of federal benches open in his second term for ??? reasons, and when he just didn't even put up a fight as the Republicans stole a SCOTUS pick from him

the courts are gone. the SCOTUS is gone until 2065 unless bold (and completely possible) reform is enacted. reform that the people you vote for will not even consider. the federal judiciary as it stands today is a result of policy choices made by Democrats.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-17

>>it happened when Obama left hundreds of federal benches open in his second term for ??? reasons,

In the future, scientists believe that we will all have access to a massive network of interlinked computers, an "internet", if you will,... and you'll be able to look up information like this in just a matter of seconds. It's going to make your future posts a lot more worth reading.

>>>bro that already happened.

Jesus Christ, we know!

ashtar. - 2023-05-18

So, fascism was always sort of vaguely defined, even at the time. Italy, Germany, Spain, etc. all kind of did it differently. It was never an ideologically coherent system. There have been a bunch of competing scholarly definitions after the fact. And the conditions under which it arose are significantly different than modern conditions.

All this is to say I do not think that semantic debates about classifying things as fascist or not don't seem very productive.

Crackersmack - 2023-05-18

shitlibs have cried wolf about fascism so loud and for so long that it basically means nothing in this context. everything Republicans do is fascism and everything Democrats do is socialism in America

ashtar. - 2023-05-18

Politics in general in America has become so unmoored from basic "here's what we want to do" that most political speech has become meaningless.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-18

Jason Stanley defines fascism not as a system of government, but as a style of politics.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-18

>>>shitlibs have cried wolf about fascism so loud and for so long that it basically means nothing in this context.

And Republicans don't misuse "fascist"? Trump included the term in his Mother's Day message on Truth Social.

The word means something to those who look it up. Everyone else, right or left, uses it as if it means nothing. To some, there's clearly a huge downside to knowing what the word means.

ashtar. - 2023-05-18

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_fascism

The answer to "is this fascism?" is almost always "kinda". Getting more into the weeds than that isn't really useful. If something is bad just say it's bad and why it's bad, don't get caught up on comparing it to an amorphous political system from 90 years ago.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-18

Okay, here's Umberto Eco's 14 points, copying and pasting from ashtar's article. They're very concise, no doubt by design

"The cult of tradition", characterized by cultural syncretism, even at the risk of internal contradiction. When all truth has already been revealed by tradition, no new learning can occur, only further interpretation and refinement.
"The rejection of modernism", which views the rationalistic development of Western culture since the Enlightenment as a descent into depravity. Eco distinguishes this from a rejection of superficial technological advancement, as many fascist regimes cite their industrial potency as proof of the vitality of their system.
"The cult of action for action's sake", which dictates that action is of value in itself and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science.
"Disagreement is treason" – fascism devalues intellectual discourse and critical reasoning as barriers to action, as well as out of fear that such analysis will expose the contradictions embodied in a syncretistic faith.
"Fear of difference", which fascism seeks to exploit and exacerbate, often in the form of racism or an appeal against foreigners and immigrants.
"Appeal to a frustrated middle class", fearing economic pressure from the demands and aspirations of lower social groups.
"Obsession with a plot" and the hyping-up of an enemy threat. This often combines an appeal to xenophobia with a fear of disloyalty and sabotage from marginalized groups living within the society (such as the German elite's "fear" of the 1930s Jewish populace's businesses and well-doings; see also antisemitism). Eco also cites Pat Robertson's book The New World Order as a prominent example of a plot obsession.
Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak". On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.
"Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy" because "life is permanent warfare" – there must always be an enemy to fight. Both fascist Germany under Hitler and Italy under Mussolini worked first to organize and clean up their respective countries and then build the war machines that they later intended to and did use, despite Germany being under restrictions of the Versailles treaty to not build a military force. This principle leads to a fundamental contradiction within fascism: the incompatibility of ultimate triumph with perpetual war.
"Contempt for the weak", which is uncomfortably married to a chauvinistic popular elitism, in which every member of society is superior to outsiders by virtue of belonging to the in-group. Eco sees in these attitudes the root of a deep tension in the fundamentally hierarchical structure of fascist polities, as they encourage leaders to despise their underlings, up to the ultimate leader, who holds the whole country in contempt for having allowed him to overtake it by force.
"Everybody is educated to become a hero", which leads to the embrace of a cult of death. As Eco observes, "[t]he Ur-Fascist hero is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death."
"Machismo", which sublimates the difficult work of permanent war and heroism into the sexual sphere. Fascists thus hold "both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality".
"Selective populism" – the people, conceived monolithically, have a common will, distinct from and superior to the viewpoint of any individual. As no mass of people can ever be truly unanimous, the leader holds himself out as the interpreter of the popular will (though truly he dictates it). Fascists use this concept to delegitimize democratic institutions they accuse of "no longer represent[ing] the voice of the people".
"Newspeak" – fascism employs and promotes an impoverished vocabulary in order to limit critical reasoning.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-18

To be honest, I posted that without reading it, and having read it, I think it's dead on.

Fascism is not a political doctrine, it's a way to seize power and hold it.

What I remember from reading Jason Stanley is that fascism romanticizes the past, and controls the idea of the past. This is what the fake concern about Race Critical theory is about.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2023-05-18

>>>shitlibs have cried wolf about fascism so loud and for so long

Obviously, looking at where we have arrived, the shitlibs were right all along, and we should have listened.
