According to "Them: A Memoir of Parents" by Frances duPlessix Gray, it had a lot to do with the fact that the Bolsheviks confiscated a whole lot of artwork and people suddenly had a lot of blank walls to cover. I'm sure it helped heat the house, as well, though.
