...and then he's eaten by rats.

I've never seen this, but I know that clips from "Willard" and "Merlin's Magical Shop of Whatever" would be an incomplete tribute without his oscar-winning performance. Thanks.

Five stars for movies starring actors who are not handsome.

.....for your last thought, and this movie, which either wouldn't stand a chance with the studios today, or would get mutilated beyond recognition.

I love Marty. He's a big kindhearted butcher who falls in love with a wallflower that no one appreciates. It's really romantic and sweet without all the modern day connotations that drag that sort of thing down today.

StanleyPain - 2012-07-09

Yeah if it were remade today he'd be in a band or something and the soundtrack would be an endless collage of whatever was reviewed in the last month or so on Pitchfork.

I dunno! I could see a remake with Philip Seymour Hoffman being pretty good... But it really should be left as it is: An insane curveball from outer space invading the glitz and pomp of Red Scare Hollywood.

If it were made today, it would be on television. The Motherfucker Theory of Entertainment goes like this: "Over the course of many decades, and as a general rule for which there will always be exceptions, TV gets better, movies get worse."

Consider the romance between Michael Scott and Holly on "The Office". I suggest, without having seen "Marty" that it's closer than anything you're likely to see at the movies these days.

I think Hollywood comes in 22 year revolutionary spurts. We are at the end of the doldrum, so I'm expecting something hot to happen soon.

1919 - Peek of silent film art. (launch of United Artists)

1941 - One of the greatest years of Hollywood ever. Citizen Kane, Maltese Falcon, How Green Was my Valley, Sullivan's Travels, etc. etc.

1963 - Full swing of the world's New Wave cinema around Europe from Czech to France, which would inspire the American New Wave of the late 60's and early 70's from Woody Allen to Robert Altman. Godard, Chabrol, Truffaut's careers were established.

1985 - Back to the Future

1990's - Rise of Indie Acceptance and Lower Production Values in the Main Stream

2012 - Baleen's Youtube Channel

Actually, this was based on a teleplay.

Paddy Chayevsky wrote this? I have to see it,

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-07-09

Jesus, Marty. So you've found true love. That doesn't give you the right to hurt people like that.
