Way inferior to the original comic, unfortunately. (Except for the Shoveler, he was great.) The point of the Mystery Men wasn't that they were wacky inept heroes, they were more like what you'd get if the blue collar workers at the corner bar got powers rather than dashing educated types. Odd power sets too, like Bondo Man the Man of Living Bondo, or Jumpin' Jehosephat.

I loved this movie but haven't seen it since I was like 16. I didn't know it was based off a comic.. I guess I could've assumed it was, like TMNT, The Tick.. to me it was just a funny Watchmen.

I wouldn't say the comic (mostly tie-ins with "Flaming Carrot") was a masterpiece, but at least it didn't go the lazy route of Guy Who Pretends He Has Powers To Impress Girls (Ben Stiller) or Elaborate Costume With Hilariously Incongruous Sneakers (Hank Azaria). It just sort of wandered off down its own path, like lots of independent / underground comics of the 80s did. It wasn't good or bad, it mostly just was, and your enjoyment most likely tracked with whether you bought into the creator's (Bob Burden's) vision of absurdist humor.

In the comics, Mr. Furious was a fearless brawler type, who would get so angry that he'd become bulletproof. He wouldn't have taken kindly to Ben Stiller's snarky, ironically self-aware character. On the other hand, the movie version of the Shoveler (a guy who was really good at shoveling and wore his kids' little league equipment for protection) was much better than the comic version, who was a guy who possessed King Arthur's shovel. And Janeane Garofalo looked very much like a character Bob Burden would draw, especially the eyes; I always wondered if that was deliberate.

I GOT OPINIONS

I never knew it was based on a comic, either. I thought it was cleverly spoofing all the "dark & gritty" superhero flicks that followed in the wake of Tim Burton's "Batman".

While it's not bad, with the assembled talent it could have been a lot better. The director, Kinka Usher, has stated about this movie, "I am here to make the studio money."
This is the only film he has ever directed.

My dad really loved this movie when it came out.
