Rent loss insurance is for lost income from property damage. You won't get a penny for lost rent from vacancies/non-payments during the pandemic.

And landlords aren't all wealthy. You can be pretty broke by coastal standards and still be a landlord, if you buy property in low income areas. It's kind of a shit job if you're not very careful selecting your tenants, and you take on a lot of debt/risk doing it.

You're painting me as one-dimensional, but it's you guys who seem to react in a knee-jerk way whenever it comes to wealthy people.

There are certainly wealthy people I look up to -- Gates much more than Bezos -- but their wealth is irrelevant. I like people who are doing good things.

The lady in the video, for instance, hasn't evicted anybody. She's found a more gentle, even compassionate approach to rent payment. And she's doing most of the talking.

So how about we, uh, treat people as humans, instead of soulless actors in class warfare? We're seeing two landlords/property managers, one of them a douchebag, but the other seems great.

I'm siding with one landlord and not the other. See how I do it? Treating people as humans and listening to what they have to say, instead of treating them as objects onto which we project our prejudices? Is it really that hard?

If we didn't buy multiunit housing with our capital, less wealthy people wouldn't have homes in a cities. It's as simple as that.

The labor would have to bussed in on a several hour commute from the slums. That's the dystopia you're vying for when you knock on my friends who rent to the less wealthy.

Residential landlords are an essential part of society, taking on a shit job dealing with tenants -- many of them screeching, unhinged, entitled people with an "eat the rich" mentality like you -- all for an uncertain return on their capital. Capital they, in my experience, typically earned from other business pursuits they're trying to juggle with their landlording. They are workaholics -- they couldn't be further from parasites.

In terms of personality, 100% of the residential landlords I know are fun, eccentric, energetic, intelligent people, and I'd describe maybe half as being highly compassionate.

I think that when people think of landlords as being fat monsters who live to extract money from other people, they're actually thinking of property managers. Property management attracts a different breed, and the few I've interacted with seem to have predatory, almost sadistic, Machiavellian mindset.

And property managers are -- guess what -- poors. Your people! Enjoy that dissonance.

Bullshit. The only reason I'm still a renter is because of inflated house/condo prices because boomers decided that landlordism wasn't shameful and they want more retirement income. There is literally no way into the market unless you want to buy into a bubble or inherit. People should be ashamed of owning multiple houses or multiple condos as individuals.

Public housing shouldn't be seen as a handhout to the poor, it should be seen as a totally normal part of a state that cares for its people. Other places (Sweden, Hong Kong, to name a few) have lots of public housing that is actually for working-class people.

Also Co-operative ownership, even of large dwellings, wouldn't be so difficult if the state didn't actively hamper it and if our society wasn't so innunaded with anti-co-op propaganda.

I say fuck the landlords and give right of first refusal to the current tenants. If I wasn't a renter I could live for years on my savings, THAT is what is scary to elites - the ability to just say "fuck it, I'm not participating in your bullshit."

Boomers with multiple homes aren't inflating property prices. Not in any meaningful way. Population density is responsible for prices going up, and there is no way of stopping that.

As such, under no scenario will your average Joe be able to afford a house with a white picket fence in a city. Even condos and suburbia are too expensive for most people. Most people will always be renters, whether we like it or not.

And thus, instead of being mad at landlords, you should more sensibly be mad at *me*, since I have the gall to own a single family home near downtown, and I'm not even bothering to rent a granny flat in my backyard. I'm occupying a tremendous amount of square footage deep in a city, and I refuse to be a landlord. If I sold my property to a developer who threw up a multiunit for a landlord, housing supply would go up, and rent would go down. A landlord would help the situation.

So, we need landlords. What can be done? A right of first refusal clause would do nothing to decrease property prices, and it's irrelevant for multiunits since anyone renting in a multiunit can't afford the multiunit; not sure why you bring it up. You know that public housing are still rentals, right? You'd just get to experience the joy of having Trump as your landlord.

If you did somehow succeed in converting most rental properties into condos/non-rentals, rental prices for the remaining properties would skyrocket. And thus, renters -- most people -- would be effectively evicted from the city.

The only people who would remain living in the city would be people like me, sitting in our hyper-expensive homes, snobbishly refusing to be landlords, watching the miserable peasants bus in from the distant slums.

And *that* scenario is genuinely evil. So pat your landlord on the back; they're good people, and their job really does suck much of the time.

The real enemy we're facing is the lack of a safety net in America, along with the economic woes that are only going to get worse.

Public housing and Section 8 programs are on the right track, but they're missing the point and needlessly complicating things. What we really need is Universal Basic Income along with self-driving cars, (there's no hope for public transport), so that we're less desperate and we can comfortably spread out a bit. The subsequent, lowered population density will drop property prices for both owning and renting.

You can now join me in rooting for landlords and billionaire Elon Musk, both champions of the poor. Or you can tear your hair off finding some way to rationalize hating and scapegoating them for your troubles. It's all the same to me.

The density of my city has not increased meaningfully in 20 years, but the percent of renters has increased to ~80%. Most dwellings here are owned by people who live in the far suburbs or countryside. Your argument is bullshit and just tries to justify the status quo. Landlordism is an abomination.

The rent increased because rich fucks from China, Saudi, India and every other country under the sun are allowed to gobble up property that poor Americans can't afford and they can't compete. There's less property available. Add to that local communities that won't support low income public housing, the new housing bubble that is about to burst (it's coming...you know it's coming...housing crash is definitely on its way) and a bunch of other factors like the real value of the dollar falling and wages not keeping up with that and you basically have a disaster.

But it's not just because of "Boomers did it". That's just lazy.

Hating landowners and property owners was one of the great inspirations for Mao's Cultural Revolution. Why am I not surprised by the simplistic thinking going on here?

I don't hate the landlords. I have landlordism. Once they stop being landlords they can continue about their business. I don't blame them for making decisions in their best interest in the current system, but the current system is fucked.
