this game was a huge disappointment. i would have preferred a simple remake instead of this. i dunno, maybe it was their "108 stars of destiny" approach to your npc's, maybe it was the near complete lack of lavos as i remembered him from the first game, maybe i was drinking too much at the time and didn't have my life in order. one way or the other, i really felt sad after playing this game, and not in the "play with my emotions" kind of way, but in the "i could have done something so much better in with that time" kinda way. grrr.

Gaaaaaaaaay

FABIO2 - 2007-12-04

Horrible game. The worst kind of "throw out a bunch of spoileriffic clips from future cutscenes" intro

RomancingTrain - 2007-12-04

Awful game. Great music.

anvill - 2007-12-04

Awful game, great opening theme. Mitsuda dropped the ball on a lot of this game's songs (e.g. the guitar guy's theme).

Aeschylus - 2007-12-04

Great game, great music.

Lothy - 2007-12-04

Good game, fantastic music. But then again, I hadn't played Chrono Trigger when I'd played this, so I was not as disappointed, perhaps.

notascientist - 2007-12-04

I am going to have to go with Awful Game/Great Music on this one. The fact is that Chrono Trigger was a cute, nice little JRPG with a sort of interesting and innovative battle system and a story you don't have to be Japanese and stupid to understand. Chrono Cross, on the other hand, is an angsty, incomprehensible mess of polygons with a plot which makes about as much sense as FF7. On top of that, they got rid of the really interesting parts of the Chrono Trigger battle system. Schlock. Three starts (in the spirit of inflated video game review scores).

FABIO2 - 2007-12-04

Also:

Replacing the cool time traveling mechanic that affected future time period with two alternate worlds with completely arbitrary cosmetic differences.

Replacing your flying time machine with a FUCKING CANOE.

Adramelech - 2007-12-04

Good game, better music. I know exactly where the OST is as we speak, while the actual game itself is lost in annals of PSone storage hell.

And there was nothing incomprehensible about the plot, although it probably helps to be a huge fan familiar with Radical Dreamers and such.

Adramelech - 2007-12-04

Or a huge fag, whatever.

FABIO2 - 2007-12-04

The plot was the very definition of incomprehensible. The ending was literally a cut straight to credits the instant you struck the final blow on the last boss, unless you fulfilled all the conditions for the "good" ending which was IMPOSSIBLE to figure out without a FAQ.

"It helps to own a visual novel never released outside Japan" isn't very convincing.

PLOT SPOILERS!

The main character is attacked by a panther as a child, and his cry for help is heard by limbo time goddess who saves him but his father goes on a quest to find an antidote for the panther's poison and is absorbed by an alternate reality supercomputer that turns your father into an anthropomorphic panther to hunt you down. Limbo time goddess is somehow reborn as a young girl who you stab when the man father panther possesses your body so he can get access to the alternate reality supercomputer even though he IS the alternate reality supercomputer. This allows him to summon a tower which...does nothing. Suddenly the game remembers it's supposed to be a Chrono Trigger sequel so it drops a bunch of names and that's it, really they could have had those characters be anyone. 90% of all plot points are revealed in five hundred paragraphs of text dumped onto you right before the last boss fight where it's mentioned that Lavos was a intergalactic sperm that rammed his way into this egg Earth to give birth to humans, but this was causing the space time continuum to collapse or something so you have to kill him. To get the "good" ending you have to defeat cheap knockoff Lavos with the power of LOVE and HARMONY via your pan flute and a sequence of notes you never would have discovered without a FAQ. The "good" ending is a paragraph of text saying how humans are all potential spermatozoa waiting to fertilize this egg Earth and that your character is the one sperm that gets to do it so you can set limbo time goddess (who turns out to be Schala from Chrono Trigger for no real reason other then to name drop) free and cut to a FMV of a woman with a cheap blonde wig standing in the middle of a crowded Tokyo street THE END.

Fuck this game.

Quad9Damage - 2007-12-04

What really sucks about the plot is that the 'good' ending of Chrono Trigger left things open, and they could've easily made a sequel about Crono searching for his mom or Magus looking for his sister.

Nikon - 2009-01-25

What Quad9 said.

zatojones - 2007-12-04

these games are always retarded

I remember playing this in high school and thinking it was the absolute greatest thing ever. Now, though... well, let's just say that some things lose their appeal as you get older. The 50+ playable characters had no personalities beyond their external appearances and bad accents.

Oh, and the Chrono Cross Code was red, yellow, green, blue, black, and white, the element colors. I had to memorize it to get that stupid 'good' ending, and it's still stuck in my head.

lolcoolj - 2007-12-04

This is basically my take on it. I was pumped when it came out and played the hell out of it. I dug out the PSX and tried it again a few months back and it didn't have the same effect at all. I dig the music, and the effort, but the game itself was frustrating with its trap elements, color matching, annoying mazes and 100+ playable characters which were mostly clones of each other.

Xenocide - 2007-12-04

What frustrates me about this game is that all the elements were there for it to be great. Chrono Trigger had just enough unresolved plot threads to feed into this story, the dimension-hopping bit could have been great if there had been more than one dimension (or if that dimension were actually different and not near-identical to the main world) and the music, of course, was outstanding. Instead we got a confused mess of a game with a battle system based on colors and percentages and a plot that had no idea what it was doing.

Caminante Nocturno - 2007-12-04

I don't even want to talk about this game.

yourmother - 2007-12-04

Ursa_minor - 2007-12-04

how do you live up to chrono trigger?

William Burns - 2007-12-04

I guess you don't. Great music, though.

yoyo1 - 2007-12-10

awful game and boring music

Pie Boy - 2008-07-12

Never played this game, cool music, no video game intro week tag

Nikon - 2009-01-25

Five stars for the music, - 4 stars for a horribly disappointing game.
