The best theory for his brand of loopy I've heard is that he thinks this matter-making molecule of his is the same one that makes Bruce Banner huge when he turns into the Hulk.
And Pangaea makes no sense to him, but this "growing Earth" theory does, because his "comic book artist mind" said so. Oy.
